Buchu is an evergreen, multi-stemmed, aromatic, perennial re-sprouting woody shrub that normally grows about 2 m tall. The plant is particularly adapted to dry conditions and can be found on sunny hillsides and damp lower slopes. It requires a lime-free, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sunny position.
Leaves: The leaves are alternate to opposite, 14-25 mm long, broadly elliptic with a rounded and recurved apex. They are glabrous with prominent oil glands on the underside, giving them a strongly aromatic peppermint-like odor. Harvesting occurs when the plant is flowering or fruiting in summer.
Flowers & Fruits: Star-shaped flowers appear in terminal clusters with white, pink, red, or purple petals. Flowering occurs from June to November, followed by a brownish capsule that releases seeds.
