Valeriana officinalis (Latin name: Valeriana officinalis L.) is a perennial, cold-resistant, flowering, herbaceous plant of the family Sapinaceae, up to 120 cm high; rhizomes are stubby and head-shaped, stems are hollow, and cauline leaves are ovate to broadly ovate, corymbs are panicle terminal, corolla lavender or white, filaments flat, flowering and fruiting from July to September.
Valerian is native to parts of Asia and Europe, and is cultivated in North America. Its stems and leaves are used as food by the larvae of some lepidopteran species (butterflies and moths). The rhizomes and roots of valerian are used for medicinal purposes, which can dispel wind, relieve spasm, and treat bruises and injuries. It can also be used as a dietary supplement. Valerian is macerated, ground, and dehydrated into convenient packages, such as capsules, for its sedative and anti-anxiety properties.
